Day 1Depart USADepart USA: Board your overnight flight to Nuremberg.
Day 2NurembergEmbark on your Ship: Transfer from Nuremberg to your luxurious river cruise ship. Note that transfers are not included for cruise only passengers. Step aboard for a welcome by your crew, who will help you prepare for an enchanting week of cruising. Settle into your cabin, which will be your home for the next week, and explore the facilities of the compact river ship. Tonight gather with your fellow travelers for a welcome dinner. (D)
Day 3Nuremburg & Main-Danube CanalNuremburg & Main-Danube Canal: Enjoy a tour of this historic city with its fabulous Gothic churches and elegant patrician houses. Although Nuremberg suffered extensive damage during World War II, much of it was restored to its original style. See the storybook 900-year-old ramparts that surround the city, the Imperial Castle and the Justice Palace where the War Crimes Tribunal sat in 1946. At lunchtime, rejoin the ship further along the Main-Danube Canal and continue to the highest point of your cruise - 1,332 feet above sea level. In 1992 an important canal link from the Rhine to the Danube River was completed, through the Main River, which opened up shipping between the North Sea and Black Sea, a distance of 2,176 miles. Then descend through stair-step locks to the charming Bavarian town of Dietfurt. (B, L, D)
Day 4Medieval RegensburgMedieval Regensburg: This morning takes you through the final stretch of the Main-Danube Canal. Tour Regensburg, considered one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Germany. A guided tour will show you the city's architectural highlights, including the Old Town Hall and the Porta Pretoria - gates to a Roman fort which was built in 179 AD. Marvel at beautiful churches and one of the oldest bridges crossing the Danube. The rest of the afternoon is free for exploring, or to join the optional excursion to beautiful Weltenburg Abbey in the Danube Gorge. In the evening enjoy a musical performance onboard. (B, L, D)
Day 5Passau & Linz or SalzburgPassau & Linz or Salzburg: Cruise to Passau, where the Rivers Inn and Ilz join the Danube. Built on a narrow rocky tongue of land between the Danube and the Inn, Passau faces the wooded cliffs and the fortress of Oberhaus on the left bank of the Danube. Your city tour takes you to explore this fairytale city founded more than 2,000 years ago. If you wish, take an optional full day excursion to fascinating Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and the site of internationally famous music and drama festivals. Salt mining has historically been important to the city and today it is full of charming houses and quaint streets. For those staying onboard, enjoy a scenic cruise from Passau into Austria and on to Linz. After dinner, take a walk through this delightful town, Austria's third largest city and a major river port. (B, L, D)
Day 6Melk & ViennaMelk & Vienna: Cruise through the narrow Strudengau and reach the Wachau Valley early this morning. Dock in Melk and take a guided tour of Melk Abbey, one of Europe's great sights. Established as a fortified Benedictine abbey in the 11th century, it was destroyed by fire so that what you see today is 18th-century Baroque and restored in 1996. Cruise through the Wachau Valley, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. With its steep hills, baroque villages, ancient monuments, and over 50 wineries, the valley will captivate you. Reach Vienna where you may explore the city a little on your own after dinner. Until World War I Vienna was the capital of the mighty Habsburg Empire. (B, L, D)
Day 7Vienna HighlightsVienna Highlights: Sightseeing includes the Imperial Hofburg Palace, Habsburg residence from the 13th century to 1918, which today is headquarters of the Spanish Riding School and the Vienna Boys' Choir. See the world-famous Vienna State Opera House and the awe-inspiring St. Stephen's Cathedral with its colorful ceramic roof tiles, and visit the National Library. You will have free time to browse around the shops in Karntnerstrasse or you may wish to visit the Sacher Cafe, where the famous Sachertorte was first created. Rejoin your ship and enjoy dinner as you glide past Slovakia and cruise overnight to Budapest, Hungary's vibrant capital. (B, L, D)
Day 8BudapestExplore Budapest: Enjoy a morning at leisure to explore the pedestrianized Vaci utca, stroll along the Danube Embankment or try some of the baths for which the city is famous. After lunch your sightseeing tour includes the two parts of the city - Buda and Pest, on opposite banks of the Danube. See some of the seven bridges, including the famous Chain and Elizabeth Bridges, which connect Buda on the right bank with Pest on the left. From historic Buda Castle you will enjoy a splendid view of the twin cities spread over both banks of the River. Your tour also features the distinctive Fisherman's Bastion, the marvelous Royal Palace, St. Stephen's Basilica, and much more. Say farewell to your newfound friends at tonight's Gala Farewell Dinner. (B, L, D)
